aickelin

My long-term research vision is to create an integrated framework of problem understanding, modelling and analysis techniques, based on an inter-disciplinary perspective of their closely-coupled nature. I believe this will lead to breakthrough advances in addressing challenging real-world problems. A summary of my current research interests is Modelling, Artificial Intelligence and Complexity Science for Data Analysis in the Health, Security and Digitial Economy Domains.

Research

I am a Professor of Computer Science at The University of Nottingham, where I am also the the Head of School of Computer Science and a member of one of its main research groups: Intelligent Modelling & Analysis (IMA). Previous roles include being an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow, a member of EPSRC’s Complexity SAT and ICT SAT and having acted as an EPSRC IDEAS Factory mentor and as a keynote speaker for various national and international conferences, including ICARIS, TradeTech and EPSRC’s Early Career Workshop for ICT. My editorial duties include being an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation and an Editorial Board member of Evolutionary Intelligence. I have authored over 100 papers in international journals and conferences and participated in over 50 international Conference Programme Committees.

My research started in 1995 through two optimisation projects at the University of Mannheim (the leading German Business School). There I also gained a Business Science degree (Diplomkaufmann in Betriebswirtschaftslehre). In addition, I was awarded a European Master degree in Business Science, only given to the top 1% of students each year. In 1999, I completed a PhD in Computer Science (AI) within 2½ years of starting at the University of Wales (Swansea) where I also worked as a teaching assistant. Since then I have held lectureships in Mathematics at the University of the West of England and in Computer Science at the Universities of Bradford and Nottingham.

In total, I have been awarded over £5 million EPSRC research funding as Principal Investigator and over £20 million as Co-Investigator. I have worked almost my entire research career in cross-disciplinary fields, including my Advance Fellowship on immune-inspired security (EP/D071976/1), leading EPSRC’s largest Adventure grant on Danger Theory (GR/S47809/01), investigating immunology for robots (EP/E003257/1), understanding complexity and agent-based simulation to reduce energy consumption (EP/G05956X/1 and EP/I000496/1), two IDEAS factory projects on modelling and simulation of Cargo Screening and Management Practices (EP/G004234/1 and EP/D503949/1) and leading two EPSRC networks on Productivty and Artifical Immune Systems (EP/D036623/1 and GR/S56627/01). I am also a Co-Investigator of Nottingham’s Digital Econmoy Hub – Horizon (EP/G065802/1).

My long-term research vision is to create an integrated framework of problem understanding, modelling and analysis techniques, based on an inter-disciplinary perspective of their closely-coupled nature. I believe this will lead to breakthrough advances in addressing challenging real-world problems. A summary of my current research interests is Modelling, Artificial Intelligence and Complexity Science for Data Analysis, using methodologies such as:

  • Artificial Immune Systems (AIS) and Computational Modelling of the Immune System
  • Intrusion Detection, Computer Security and Anomaly Detection
  • System Dynamic, Agent Based and Discrete Event Simulation of Complex Systems
  • Evolutionary and other Data Mining Algorithms
