Research

I am an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow and Professor of Computer Science at The University of Nottingham where I lead the Intelligent Modelling & Analysis Research Group (IMA).

 

My research started in 1995 through two optimisation projects at the University of Mannheim (the leading German Business School). There I also gained a Business Science degree (Diplomkaufmann in Betriebswirtschaftslehre). In addition, I was awarded a European Master degree in Business Science, only given to the top 1% of students each year. In 1999, I completed a PhD in Computer Science (AI) within 2½ years of starting at the University of Wales (Swansea) where I also worked as a teaching assistant. Since then I have held lectureships in Mathematics at the University of the West of England and in Computer Science at the Universities of Bradford and Nottingham.

 

A summary of my current research interests is: Modelling, Artificial Intelligence and Complexity Science. In total, I have been awarded some £3 million EPSRC research funding as Principal Investigator (including an Advanced Research Fellowship, an Adventure Grant and three IDEAS Factory projects) and over £13 million as Co-Investigator on:

  • Artificial Immune Systems (AIS) and Computational Modelling of the Immune System
  • Intrusion Detection, Computer Security and Anomaly Detection
  • System Dynamic, Agent Based and Discrete Event Simulation of Complex Systems
  • Genetic and other Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs, GAs)
